Qing dynasty was the last feudal royal power in china. It was also a period, in which Chinese art was on the wane on the one hand, while on the rise on the other. In terms of painting, figure painting, especially those gongbi figures, which have great cognitive significance, have been slightly improved. However, mountains-and-waters and flowers-and-birds paintings as well as the figure paintings, especially Xieyi figure painting made great progress. In the middle of 19th century, as Shanghai's economy developed rapidly, it became the outpost for Chinese modern painting, in which"haipai"paintings was the representative figures. Haipai's painting styles were completely fresh, and most of their products were xieyi flowers-and-birds, and figures painting. They were vivid and appealing, catering for both refined and popular tastes. However, they contended with orthodox schools, which advocated restored ancient styles. Thus, haipai painting broke through the tight encirclement since Yuan and Ming dynasty, propelling Chinese painting forward. Haishang School was one of the most important and influential art schools in the history of Chinese modern painting. SanRen discussed in the article were the three main painters in the earlier stages of Haishang School and they played a decisive role in this school's establishment and development. In order to analyze and compare Haishangsanren's painting art, the article mainly employed approaches of artistic historiography and comparative science. Their beneficial research and creativity in every aspect have greatly influenced Chinese painting in the 20th century. The author hoped that through this research paper, people could recognize the relationship between tradition and creativity, so they can pay more attention to the position of Haishangsanren, which inherited the past and ushered in the future. The main body of this article can be divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the author discussed the direct reasons for haishang painting and social condiditons for its emergence. The article carried out the analysis from Shanghai's economic development and cultural exchange so as to elicit the vital effort made by Sanren for haishang painting school's establishment and development.In the second chapter, the author introduces Haiishangsanren'life experiences, masterpieces and artistic styles, in order to provide a better understanding of their products as a whole. In the third chapter, the author centers on the differences and similarities of their styles and Ren Bonian's inheritance and development for Er'Ren . Their similarities are analyzed in five aspects; themes, styles, thoughts, the painters'professionalization and inheritance. In the fourth chapter, the author mainly discussed Haishangsanren's artistic achievements and influence.
