An Exploration On The Inhibition Mechanism Of List Directed Forgetting

The ability to update a person's memory system can be tested by the ability of the person's directed forgetting. In recent year, the research focus on the mechanism of directed forgetting. In this paper, a review was presented on the definition, categories, measures and the current research situations of directed forgetting. Then, two experiments were designed based on the modification directed forgetting in order to research whether the mechanism of directed forgetting is retrieval induce forgetting.In study 1, to study the effect of directed forgetting increases with additional study of list2, subjects were asked to study the list2 some times before to retrieval practice. The ANOVA analysis of list1's final recall shows the main effect of the group was significant. The interaction between the number of additional study of list2 and the group wasn't significant. Under the situation of additional study of list2, final recall increased with retrieval practice but recall list1 of directed forgetting group wasn't not with that. The conclusion is we observed directed forgetting under the situation of additional study of list2, but the magnitude of the directed forgetting effect was not increased by additional study of list2.In study 2, experiment 1 is modified with the increase of shared retrieval cue to make the retrieval practice was based on shared retrieval cue. The ANOVA analysis of final recall of list1 shows the main effect of group was significant and the interaction between retrieval practice and group wasn't significant. Under the situation of having shared retrieval cue, final recall of list2 of directed forgetting group was increased with the number of retrieval practice increases while recall of list1 was reduced with that. On the country, final recall of list1 of remember group was increased with the number of retrieval practice increases In summer, we observed directed forgetting under the situation of having shared retrieval cue, but the magnitude of the directed forgetting effect was not increased by it.Two studies here indicate retrieval induce forgetting wasn't better explain the mechanism of inhibition of directed forgetting. What's more, two studies also dictate some other theories.
