Directed forgetting emphasized on the intentional and directional of forgetting .The research on directed forgetting is giving the subjects certain materials, some of which must be remembered and the others of which must be forgotten. If the forgotten items are recollected poorer than the remembered ones, then there exists directed forgetting effect. The learning materials exposed to the subjects by two methods:item-method or list- method. There are two main theoretical explanations on directed forgetting, one is based on encoding and the other is extraction inhibition.The present research is focus on the effect of source memory on directed forgetting. Experiment 1, we examined the phenomenon that semantic relevancy can induce the directed forgetting effects decreased or vanished, and the question weather source memory (source monitoring) is important for the directed forgetting. Experiment 2, we adopted associative source(spatial location)and organizational source(color)to probe how directed forgetting impact on source memory. The results are as follows: (1) Directed forgetting effects was found abolished when the TBF list and TBR list were strongly associated. The accuracy of source memory could influence the effects of directed forgetting. (2) Directed forgetting in the list method affects recognition memory for source. The source memory of TBF items is poorer than TBR items but not for the items themselves. (3)Instructing the FR participants to forget the TBF list could have created a serious source-memory inhibition. The absent of directed forgetting effects seems to stem from the strong semantic associations between the lists. The instruction to forget lead to episodic inhibition.
