A Study On The "Music Quotations" In Works By Ives

This paper takes the"Music quotations"in Ives'compositions as the researching aim,analizes and compares the"Music quotations"based on his three symphonies, proving the uniquence of Ives'transformation of the old"aquotation"tradition into his"quotation technique".At the same time,the author analizes and researches the cultural phenomenon of Ives'"Music quotations"from the philosophic and aesthetic aspects. This paper is devivded into three parts to relate Ives'"quotation technique"according to the literature and audio materials .Part 1, the"Music quotations"in Ives'compositions.In this chapter,through discussing the special position of"Music quotations"in Ives'compositions and the using of his"quotation technique"in his different periods of his life,as the author of this paper,I introduces the importance and uniqunce of the"Music quotations"in Ives'composing programe.Part 2, Ives'using of the"Music quotations".Ives was a productive musician,but all of his master compositions were in the two decades of 1896 to 1916 of his life.The chapter relates the detailed use of the"Music quotations"through analizing the"Music quotations"in Ives'three important symphonies in this period.Part 3, cultural analysis of Ives'"Music quotations".This paper rekons the philosophic ideas and creative consciousness of Ives'"Music quotations"are related to the historical cultural emiornment and Ives'family education style,through analizing the double effects of special historical period and the family atmosphere.
