The present thesis aims at studying and exploring the C-E translation of Yanzhao tourism culture in tourist materials by applying the German functionalist approaches. To put it clearly, the author has collected some typical examples for specific analysis, and suggested several strategies and methods applied to the translation of Yanzhao tourism culture. The author's effort is to improve and enrich the translation of tourist materials in Hebei Province, and to provide a new approach and standard for translation. For these purposes, the thesis comprises five parts, deals with the following issues.Chapter One of the thesis defines the significance of this study, presents the aim and set limit on the scope of this study.Chapter Two, the literature review, begins with pointing out the inadequacy of the traditional approaches to the translation of Yanzhao tourism culture, and then moves on to the explanation of feasibility of functional theory. The functionalist translation theory opposes the concept of equivalence, emphasizes TT function and stresses translation skopos. In this chapter, text typology and Skopos theory are reviewed as the framework of this thesis. Chapter Three focuses on the functional text typology analysis of tourist materials and discusses the Yanzhao cultural characteristics of tourist materials, namely, Yanzhao historical culture, religious culture, cuisine culture and Yanzhao tourist literature. In terms of text typology theory, tourist materials are a combination of referential and appellative function text.Chapter Four applies the functionalist approaches to the translation of Yanzhao tourism culture. In this chapter, applicable principles for translation are explored: focusing on the Chinese culture and giving attention to the receptivity of foreign tourists. The author holds the view that the unique Yanzhao cultural items in the SL should be transferred into the TL by adopting various translation strategies and methods, such as cultural analogy, rewriting, amplification, etc. In short, the translator has to find a balance between the approaches of foreignization and domestication. In addition, the author presents two tips for the tourist materials translation practice.Chapter Five is a conclusion based on the theoretical framework. It is the reiteration of the main standpoints of the thesis.
