In order to provide a theoretical guide for translators and to ensure the quality of the translated versions, this thesis gives a probe into the variation strategies of translating Chinese slogans into English.Slogan, with the fewest possible words and greatest visual effect, can be a kind of practical text. Serving as a window, through which overseas audience may know what is going on in China, Chinese slogans fully reflect the unique Chinese culture in specific context. Translators should use different translation strategies to deal with different problems in translating Chinese slogans into English. However, traditional translators always employ the"complete translation"methods, thus there are a big number of errors and defects in translated versions that badly affect the image of china. As for the research of Chinese-English slogan translation, most of the theses just simply discuss translation techniques from the perspective of Skopos Theory, Functional Equivalence or Relevance Theory and so on. It is a new attempt to study translation strategy from the perspective of variation, which aims to prove the effectiveness of applying variation strategy in slogan translation.Furthermore, translation variation put forward by Professor Huang Zhonglian is mainly concluded for translating overseas theses into Chinese. The marrow of this theory is"adaptation"for readers,"adaptation"by translators and"adaptation"on the original text. It is also helpful for literary translation, but it has never been employed in translating Chinese slogans into English. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the necessity, the feasibility, the limitation as well as the application of eight variation methods in translating Chinese slogans into English. The English versions adopted in the thesis are those of Wu Weixiong, Lu Zuben and so on. On the basis of Peter Newmark's text typology, the author classifies Chinese slogan into three types and makes case studies to prove that different variation methods can be used as the most effective ways in translating Chinese slogans into English. In conclusion, variation strategy can be employed to solve the problems caused by different languages, different cultures and different contexts in the process of Chinese-English slogan translation. It makes the translated versions easily accepted by the target readers.
