A Study Of The Strategies In Interpreting Chinese Idioms From The Perspective Of Translation Variation Theory

This paper aims to study the strategies employed in Chinese idiom interpretating under the guidance of translation variation theory.Translation Variation Theory provides eleven translation strategies such as selective translation,edited translation,condensed translation to translation the source language in accordance with specific needs of target audiences.Previous studies mainly focus on the combination of this theory with written translation or other linguistic disciplines compared with that of interpreting.Also,Chinese idioms are often short and exquisite,thus the main difficulty of interpreting Chinese idioms lies in its cultural information interpreting in short given time.This paper tries to find out the possibility and necessity of combining the theory with idiom interpreting by analyzing features and difficulties in news conference interpreting in general and Chinese idiom interpreting in particular.By analyzing a simulated news conference interpreting the author concluded three translation variation strategies that are suitable in Chinese idiom interpreting,namely:explanatory interpreting,condensed interpreting and edited interpreting,hoping to bring thoughts for the development of translation variation theory and also to provide reference for Chinese idiom interpreting.
