A Report On The E-C Translation Of Bartleby Column In The Economist Under The Guidance Of Translation Variation Theory

The outbreak of COVID-19 has disrupted the traditional business environment and had a huge impact on business management,while the shift in the way we work has posed a huge challenge for both individuals and companies.In a turbulent business context,the need for business journals for individuals and companies has become progressively imperative.The source text is taken from the Bartleby column of The Economist,which focuses on developments in worldwide business management and offers relevant advice for employees and corporate executives.Therefore,the translation of the column is of great importance to foster the development of domestic enterprises and alleviate personal anxiety.Business journalistic translation belongs to journalistic translation.The main purpose of this text is to deliver effective information to the targeted readers.It contains numerous professional terms,special syntax and a unique writing style.Under guidance of the complete translation strategy,the target readers may not absorb the specialized information or have a good reading experience due to cognitive or cultural differences.Therefore,the author adopts a translation variation strategy to guide this translation practice so as to eliminate the language comprehension barrier and improve the quality of the translation.In this report,the author mainly considers two aspects of business news genre: reader acceptance and translation value,and summarizes translation problems such as difficult terminology,redundant information,confusing language order,European-style Chinese,excessive modifiers,semantic incoherence,and cultural defaults.In order to deal with the above translation problems,the author chose Translation Variation Theory to guide this translation practice.Under the guidance of this theory,translators need to establish holistic thinking,take original content as the main basis,take special readers’ special needs as the ultimate purpose,and utilize seven translation means to make some modifications to the original text in a reasonable manner.Through case analysis and comparison,it can be seen that Translation Variation Theory has application value and guiding significance for business news genre translation,and the translation means in this theory can help translators optimize the translation.However,translators must manage the scope of translation variation to achieve the special effects of absorbing foreign information in an effective and targeted way.
