From the angle of popular literature, the author has made an overallresearch of Yang-shen's popular literature, trying to open up the newresearch regions. This paper makes a careful study of both Yang-shen'swhole popular literature and the special experience of Yang-shen duringhis battle life in the south of Yunnan and makes a serious comparationwith the trend of the popular literary creation in the middle and laterMing Dynasty, aiming to find the different value tendency and creativemechanism, and to excavate the fliexible literature view which appearsboth in refined and popular ways of all kinds and hides in the progress ofliterature practice.There are six chapters in this paper, the main points are as follows:In the introduction, after pointing out the existing cirumstances andthe research situations of Yang-shen's popular literatures through thecreative mechanism, it is considered that the model consciousness is ainside motive power for his writing of popular literature, and that theculture tendency of the times also provides a good external atmospherefor him.The first chapter emphatically analyses the "story-telling". "Thestory-telling of history of 21 kindoms" is a popular historical book forentertainment by Yang-shen during the period of his relegation. Throughthe discovering of his motive and the discussing of his novel, it reflectsthe self-adjustment of the author's value system after sufferingmisfortunes. In the course of adjustment, it has obviously showed theprinciple of mutual complement between the Confucion school and theTaoist school about Yang-shen's value system during the different stageof his life. According to the theory of narration and the summary narrateform, the tradition superiority of history and biography literature hasbeen absorbed and reformed.The second chapter mainly interprets dramatics. All kinds ofYang-shen's dramatics are identified and corrected by the analysis ofdocuments and texts, what's more, a glimpse of Yang-shen's religionconsciousness has been caught by analysis of metaphor system of "Dong Tian Xuan Ji", which is very important for the deepening of researches ofYang-shen's ideas.The four chapter deals with Yang-Shen's short novels in classicalChinese. Yang-shen persisted in historical novel view-point, and paidattention to explore novel's evidence functions. Depending on the fableform, the characteristic of parading his leaning, the minute descriptionand the subjects of searching surprise, Yang-shen's novel in classicalChinese firmly stood on it's own feet among novels in classical Chineseof the Ming dynasty. It contributed to the revival and thriving of thenovel in classical Chinese in many aspects during the Qing dynasty. "LiQing Ji" and "Jiao Li Qing Ji" occupied an important place among thecollections of short novels in classical Chinese because of its famous andunique woman theme in the Ming dynasty. The collections ofYang-shen's short novels shows his extensive knowledge because of itscompiling form with literary sketches. Yang-shen's outstanding opinionsabout women which emphasizes both her ability and appearance from hisselection of woman's subject matter.The appendix includes two articles: "the annals of Yang Shen'spopular literature" and "the extant edition and catalogue of Yang-shen'spopular literature".
