On Xu Baoqian's Ethical Thoughts

The history of Christianity in modern China appears a popular field. However, mostof the studies are carried through in historical and religious way. Chinese Christianintellectuals emerged in the era with special identities. These Christian werecultivated in traditional Chinese culture and trained in new thoughts in westerncountries. When the western culture conflicted with traditional Chinese culture,they examine the life and society calmly at the ground of the doctrines ofChristianity and Confucianism. Xu baoqian is a representation of the ChineseChristian intellectuals. This dissertation is meant to explore his ethical theoriesincluding cosmology and philosophy of life and pacifism. He persisted in hisChristian belief and also the traditional Chinese Confucian spirit, which is of highethical consciousness. Practice is another important aspect on Xu baoqian becausehe tried to work on cultural synthesis in his real life.
