The analysis of different languages can help in discovering their similarities and differences. It can also help us to use foreign language correctly. By means of a contrastive study of ones native language and a foreign language one can understand the foreign language thoroughly. English and Korean belong to different language families and types. Contrasting English and Korean t can help us to understand their differences clearly, to grasp the difficulties in the study process and to improve efficiency in study. There are many kinds of adverbial clauses in the English and Korean languages. But this thesis paper focuses on adverbial clauses of time and the conditional adverbial clauses.So far, the research that has been done On English and Korean adverbial clauses has been not thorough, only descriptions of language phenomenon without explaining the deeper syntax structure.From this point of view, thesis describes and explains the difference between English and Korean adverbial clauses in syntax structure and semantic structure. The third chapter analyzes the conjunctive words of the adverbial clauses of two languages in syntax and semantic structure. The fourth chapter studies the main clauses and the subordinate clauses in English and Korean.First, the thesis classifies English and Korean adverbial clauses. Then by using the contrastive analysis method it compares the use of conjunction regarding syntax structure and semantic structure in these two languages, so as to study the relationship between the main clause and the subordinate clause.After that the paper researches their differences in expression, and explains the causes of the differences. Finally it deals with similarities between English and Korean, so as to provide the Korean student with useful information.
