| Science essay was the fruit of popular science movement and literary movement of Chinese modem literature, which was also a combination of science and literature. Its birth was aimed at directing a new way to essay, promoting the transmission of science essay and enriching the humorous leisure essay as well. Taibai was the first magazine to advocate science essay. This thesis makes a comprehensive survey about the creation and the theory of science essay in the magazine of Taibai. It also makes an emphatic inquiry into the creation process, literary form and historical characteristics of science essay. Meanwhile, this thesis analyzes in detail how this new form of essay combines science with literature, how it makes literature simple, popular and scientific and how it endows essay with new content and new form. This thesis tries to restore and summarize the creation and experience of science essay in the magazine of Taibai and attempts to provide some historical reference to the development of popular science and literary arts.
