Over the recent centuries, a great deal of research has been made on the Western Han Dynasty prose by the scholars. But in an overall view, the introduction to it is comparatively more, the comprehensive analysis less and the special analysis about it quite few. This thesis, based on the principle that"the article should keep pace with time", depicts the stylish characteristics, development and reasons of Western Han prose in different periods of time through the methods of comparison, summarization and analysis. For each part, the survey has been given first, with focus on the social influence on then intellectuals and the resulting value and outlook esthetical taste on their prose production. Then, the thesis explores its stylish characteristics in different periods of time. From this point on, this thesis has divided the developmental history of the Western Dynasty prose into four parts: that of Emperor Liu Bang and Queen Lv, that of the from Emperor Wen to the middle stage of Emperor Wu, that of the middle stage of Emperor Wu to Emperor Xuan, and that of the late stage of the Western Han Dynasty.
