Intensive reading lesson is the comprehensive lesson, is the main lesson which takes theresponsibility of systemic language teaching, is the lesson which carries on the integratedtraining from hearing to reading and writing. The textbook is the foundation and main basis ofthe teaching. The quality of a textbook, directly influences the enthusiasm that the studentstudies, and related to the quality of teaching. The text in the textbook is a crucial item. Thecontents and language of text is important to whether a textbook can be welcomed by learner ornot. The selection of topic directly relates to the cultivation of student's comprehensive ability oflanguage using. The selection of topic not only determines the selection trend of commonly usedphrase, but also influences the integrating of phrasing structure, function item and cultural item.This paper selects 3 representative Intermediate intensive reading textbooks from which arepublished after 1990 as research object. According to the basic principles of compiling texts andsome related theories of assessing textbooks, taking the method of data-collecting statistics andquestionnaire, it describes the present compiling situation of topic selection, topic arrangementand the culture induction within topic content in the three textbooks. On this foundation, thepaper analyzes the shortages of several aspects in three textbooks, points out some problems,which should be noticed when we select topics, and proposes the improvement method.
