This article selects 32 types of tragedies from poetic dramas of Yuan Dynasty and places them in categories. It also analyzes the historical environment on which these works were produced. In addition, through the comparison with the works of Mingqing Dynasty and western countries, it elaborates the distinctive art features of Yuan tragedy. The article can be divided into 4 parts.The first chapterAccording to types of subjects, it can be classified into 4 sorts, that is, heroic tragedy, social tragedy, destiny tragedy and lyric tragedy。The second chapterThis chapter analyzes social origin that causes the tragedy of Yuan dynasty. The ethnic discrimination, the severance of the Confucian scholars official advancement and the dark prison politics constituted the political background of national oppression. The government in power used the currency devaluation, the usur, hard assignment and so on to carry on the extremely brutal plunder and exploitation of the common people. That was the economical background at that time. The social fierce turbulence caused the Confucian culture couldn't display its talents. The Confucian traditional ideas consequently declined. That was then cultural background.The third chapterThis chapter analyzes artistic characteristics of the tragedy of Yuan Dynasty. From such aspects as the theme, the structure, the tragic atmosphere and ending, it makes a comparison between the tragedy of Yuan dynasty and the western classical tragedy. It states our tragedy has its own unique national features based on the above.The fourth chapterThis chapter points out the difference between the tragedy of Ming dynasty and that of Mingqing dynasty from the theme and artistic characteristics.
