With the polysyllabic word in the poetry written by Li Shangyin and Du Mu as research target, the thesis segments the polysyllabic word out, counts its total number and the frequency of appearance of a single polysyllabic word, analyzes its combining modes and summarizes its general characteristics. In addition, referring to The Great Dictionary of Chinese, the thesis supplements and corrects the inadequacy of the dictionary on basis of the research.The research indicates that the vocabulary in the poetry written by Li Shangyin and Du Mu is rich; the combining modes of the polysyllabic word are various, especially those of the polysyllabic word in Pianzheng mode; the inherent and new compound words in Fujia mode are abundant, with new word-combining modes into being.The poetry written by Li Shangyin and Du Mu is an important part of the poetry of the late Tang dynasty. The thesis attempts to outline an overview of the polysyllabic word in it, probes into the feature of poetry vocabulary of the late Tang dynasty and fills in the blank of dynastic Chinese language research.
