Hong Lou Meng, the representative work of Qing Dynasty, ischosen in this dissertation; the shortened form "Hong" is used in thefollowing sections, and also the verb reduplication in it are researchedin an all-round way. In this dissertation the author gives a reasonableand accurate explaination on sevaral grammatical functions of the verbreduplication as far as possible. Comparing with the former works, thisdissertation discusses the features of the verb reduplication in QingDanasty, and the Chinese historical status of the verb reduplication in "Hong" which is a connecting link between the preceding literatures andthe following ones, so a more deepening cognition can be obtained on themodern Chinese verb-reduplication.Firstly, this chapter cheifly presents the important status of the verbreduplication in the Chinese grammer system, and also the history andpresent research work of the verb reduplication done by the grammarians,especially the research on the era of modern Chinese. Then the authoroutlines some elementary concepts of the researchers, expeciates thenecessity of the dissertation's investigation, and gives a simpleexplaination on the correlated materials and research techniques.PartⅡ: the verb reduplication concrete forms, the data analysis ofits using frequency and the verb reduplication condition in "Hong" arediscussed. Two categories, the monosyllable and the double syllable arediscussed separately. For the monosyllable verb reduplication, a detailedinvestigation is carried on from "AA" and "A—A". For the doublesyllable verb reduplication, a detailed investigation is carried on from "ABAB" and "AABB". The author gives an objective remark on thehistorical status of the verb reduplication in "Hong", lists theconditios of the verb reduplication and categories the verbs being usedin verb reduplication.PartⅢ: A detailed analysis is given about the grammar meaning and grammar function of the verb reduplication. Four representative formats, "AA", "A—A", "ABAB", "AABB", are chosen to depict and analysisthe grammar meaning and grammar function of the monosyllable and thedoublesyllable in "Hong". The grammar functions of the verb reduplicationare reviewed from the following aspects: what sentential components theyserve as, which kinds of sentence can they suit for, and "pre-" and "post- " compents etc. Also the difference between "AA" and "A—A"and "ABAB" and "AABB" is compared in detail.PartⅣmainly investigates expression function of the verbreduplication. The author makes a conclusion that declarative sentence andimperative sentence are the representative syntax environment that the verbreduplication come forth, besides that, the author dissertates theexpression function of the verb reduplication in "Hong" from two pointof view:" what have been" and "what will be"PartⅤinvestigates the status of the verb reduplication in "Hong"on the inheritance of the former verb reduplication and the transition tothe modern Chinese, The author try to seek its important basis fromdeveloping and discarding the verb reduplication formats, the pronounobjects postposition and syntax function of the verb reduplication.
