A Study On Defining The Types Of Modern Chinese Verb Reduplication

Verb reduplication is a typical Chinese linguistic phenomenon.As the fundamental problem of verb reduplication, Scholars’ discussions about studies on the types of verb reduplication are not sufficient. Even articles seldom specifically discussed the problem. This article mainly studies the type of modern Chinese verb reduplication. According to the scholars’ related discussion on this subject,we explored the various grounds of the studies,as well as the inspiration and significance of writing this article.In order to rethink and understand the nature of Chinese verb reduplication,this article is mainly based on the relationship between the verb reduplication and the corresponding grammatical meaning to discuss the general classification of all kinds of verb reduplication in Chinese,and then discussing the verb reduplication’s emergence motives,origins,historical development and the process of grammaticalization.Finally,we further studied the type of the Chinese verbs reduplication from the perspective of the phonetic features, "bounded" and "unbounded", syntax of kinetic energy and pragmatic features.The text is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction.In this part,we firstly introduced the article subjects and the survey of studies on issues of researches on Chinese verb reduplication. Then we sorted out and combed the treatise in detail referred to the types of verb reduplication in academic community. Thus several kinds of verb reduplication that scholars have mentioned were divided into the universally recognized forms and the not widely recognized forms. Then briefly summarized the reasons for disagreement of verb reduplication and introducing research methods,significance and purpose of research problems as well as the data sources and the structure of the article.The second part we mainly introduced several types of verb reduplication that we have seen.We should make clear that the generally accepted types and the controversial types and then combed and summarized the scholars’ views and understanding about the types of verb reduplication.The third part is the focus of this article.We mainly analyzed and judgedpreviously mentioned types of verb reduplication from the perspective of grammatical meaning.We considered that Chinese verb reduplicantion mostly expressed a meaning of the “short time and light momentum”.We should make clear that Chinese verb reduplicantion is not a words overlapping but a frame overlapping.It is a means of independent expression grammar syntax. Meanwhile, Verb reduplication is a morphological change that reflects the analogy of language mechanisms.And then,We further investigated and treatised from the Chinese verb reduplication causes,sources, historical development and so on.We considered that the Chinese verb reduplication’s development exists a process of grammaticalization.The fourth part is the difficulty about this research.We mainly proposed some types of establishment angles about the verb reduplication that were phonetic features of verb reduplication, overlapped verbs was bounded or unbounded, verb reduplication’s grammatical function and pragmatic constraints in order to our further comprehension and judgment.The fifth part is conclusion.
