This thesis takes SHENBAO between 1872 to 1911 as basic data, generalizes the development of Shanghai and its entertainment industry in the late Qing dynasty, analyses its causations, and describes the development of entertainment industry in the late Qing dynasty in Shanghai concretely by three aspects: entertainment manner, entertainment establishment and entertainment idea, depicts the formation and variance of the central entertainment district. This thesis also chooses another important port city—Hankou to contrast with Shanghai, analyses their comparabilities and characteristics of the entertainment industry of each city, and makes conclusions finally. The surplus statement analyses the influence of the entertainment industry of Shanghai, and takes SHENBAO as example discussing the fine reciprocity between the mass media and the entertainment industry. This thesis draws the outline of the visage about the entertainment industry of Shanghai in the late Qing dynasty, exhibits its skeleton of development and mass characteristics. The purpose is to quest the course of the modernization of Chinese cities from the aspect of social life.
