Symbolism is an important skill in the field of oil painting and used as a vehicle for communication with viewer by its charm .To be a painting code in Renaissance Italy ,Symbolism is implicit in plenty of painting works .It shows not only Italian artists talent for the creative use of symbol ,but also a nation with considerable culture.In this thesis, to begin with,I try to define the connotation of symbol and mark and give a general summery of the effects of symbolism on painting works .Moreover, I expound and prove art works is a kind of symbol or mark. It has great help for understanding how symbol works as a technique in the world of art .The third parts of the thesis concretely explain the symbol and mark of painting in Renaissance Italy through numbers of examples of works. At last, I sum up the aesthetic characters of symbolism.On the basis of former research of symbol and marks, I try to make a relatively systemic and concrete analysis of symbols in painting works in renaissance Italy. By finish this paper, I hope I could have further understanding of art in Renaissance Italy.
