The author takes the"Ya-Dong Edition of Chinese Ancient Vernacular Fictions"as a research target in this dissertation and discusses the great significance of the"Ya-Dong Edition"as the history of Chinese ancient fiction is considered. The author will discuss this problem in three aspects.First of all, the establishment and growth of Ya-Dong Publishing House are presented based on the background materials. The author finds that the plan of publishing"Ya-Dong Edition"is supported by those who stood for vernacular literature during the"May the fifth campaign"as Chen Du-xiu and Hu Shi. That is the reason why Ya-Dong Publishing House began to publish those fictions.Next, the author did careful textual research of the"Ya-Dong Edition". This research is divided into three parts: the preface and the postscript, by which the scholars did their academic research; the punctuation and fragmenting, with which the ancient fictions were dealt with modern grammar; proofreading, using traditional methods of collation. Through many examples quoted, the features of the"Ya-Dong Edition"are presented to the readers.Finally, the academic and social values of the"Ya-Dong Edition"are studied based on its publishing and distributing condition.
