30's is an age which publishing is taken as a center. Among many small publishing houses, the Modern Publishing House is the most special in its publishing style and sense.Its development can be divided into two periods. In the first period, they emphasize that publishing follow political guidance catering to the revolutionary literature tidal current. In the second period, they emphasize that publishing separate from political ideology, and pay more attention to literature. All these play a great role in the 1930's New Literature. On the basis of massive firsthand materials, this paper elaborates the two periods' different publication styles and analyzes its important influence in the New Literature. And that's the significance of this research of Modern Publishing House.Then, it discloses the writer's intention and the way of study. The body begins with introducing the founding of the Modern Publishing House, mainly dwelling on the embodiment, in publications, of two periods' publishing styles. And finally, the paper analyzes the particular cultural function presented by its publishing styles. I. Two Kinds of Conflicts: The Modern Publishing House's Founding and Development The Modern Publishing House is born in a new environment and a new trend of time that many small publishing houses rapidly spring up in Shanghai of 1930's. It is developing with the in-house conflicts between Hong Xuefan and Zhang Jinglu, both of the bosses of the Modern Publishing House. And finally, in the hard works of several editors, particularly Zhang Jinglu, the publishing house culminates in its history. II. The Two Periods: The Major Characteristics of the Modern Publishing House Among many small publishing houses, The Modern Publishing House's most major characteristic is that it can be distinctly divided into two periods.
