In non-English countries, English teaching as well as the spread of English culture, display different features. English, used as the teaching practice of the first language, constitutes the total field of spread for English teaching in Chinese society. Through the investigation into the place-in-itself of English culture, the place of spread constructed by English teaching-learning and the place of arriving for the students to accept English, this thesis attempts to clarify the decrease and increase of Chinese unit for the cultural elements of English language in the place of teaching-learning spread. It aims at providing basis for the reform and perfection of English teaching-leaning and practice.The thesis is divided into three parts.The first part studies the English in its own society. It is regarded as the original state of English language: The existence of English speech, a living existence, is going on a natural metabolic process, accepting and enriching of the culture in the new time and space with the situation of the system itself being relatively stable. In its own field of culture, English constructs the development in three dimensions with its characteristics of opening and growing; condensing, enriching and recording the past culture; of using it flexibly and steadily in modern society; and of absorbing and accommodating new-appearing culture. Hence, English language exists and grows organically in its own social cultural environment.The second part analyses the place of spread formed from the spread process of English teaching-learning in China. Because the English spread is relatively narrow in the foreign environment; it makes the teaching spread in school become the main channel for English language learning and using.The English teaching spread presents unique features in Chinese society as following: to connect the subject and object whose mother tongue is Chinese through the second language; to practice class-teaching with stationary way; the lack of situation for practical application in society.The third part studies the arriving place of English teaching spread. The reform of English teaching style and methods in Chinese society is just moving along the orientation of validity and practicality. When English is spread as the second language, it produces decrease and increase of the culture of English language in the target society. That is, the reduction from the element of sediment, application and alteration; the increase from the element of culture, teaching-learning in class and the purpose of examination.It claims that the feasible method to solve the problem of unfavorable reduce and increase to the elements of English culture is the following: To change the proportion of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the English tests of different levels, and to redirect the English teaching spread in China toward a more practical orientation, turning the act of English teaching as a medium in intercultural communication.
