This thesis, opening with the origin of the public holiday of Lantern Festival in ancient China, discusses its formation and development in a full range, and makes analysis of the Lantern Festival from the public art perspective in respect of its both public and artistic design features.This thesis analyzes the planning and management of the Lantern Festival, including its personnel participation, organizational administration, area divisions in large scale entertainment activities; compares and expounds in details the artistic designs and the artistic features of colored lanterns in the ancient times; makes researches in the interrelations between the public art in the ancient China and the management of public time and space, the civilian life of all trades, the administrative plans of ancient cities and trade development as well the visual design of activity areas.This thesis further explains the functions and meanings of the Lantern Festival in public art of ancient China from both the historical and contemporary point of view with regard to the design features of the Lantern Festival, and thus concludes that the Lantern Festival was one of the public holidays in ancient China which was participated by all trades of people, covering the widest fields of culture for the longest duration of time and with the most artistic interest.Researches find that attached with the Lantern Festival in ancient China are the civilized spirit of extensive participation, the open and democratic form of public art and the political function of spiritual consensus, and the possibility of driving forth the economic advancement and diversified cultural improvement; by combining the current status of public art design for the traditional public holidays in China, this thesis provides a useful reference for public art design of the present time.
