Chinese traditional pattern has glittered with dazzling brilliance since its emergence. As other traditional patterns, the butterfly pattern plays a significant role in the history of Chinese patterns. The butterfly pattern maintains its everlasting vitality after thousands of years and has a close connection with the Chinese traditional culture. By various influences of background ages, social environment, economic situations and aesthetic concepts, the butterfly pattern witnesses a series of changes in its forms and symbolic meanings with different historic sediments during its development. For ages, the traditional propitious concepts and aesthetic meanings revealed by the butterfly patterns have a significant impact on our modern lives.Our current work is focused on the studies on the butterfly pattern from its content of historical source and symbolic diversities, to its various forms and impacts on ancient society of production and recent areas of design. We will also search for the beauty of twisting knits and knots during the original, transitional and developmental stages of the butterfly patterns, thus reveal the everlasting secret of this traditional pattern in the Chinese civilization history.
