ShuiHuZhuan is our country's first lengthy serial novel which took the peasant uprising as the theme. It was written round about the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty. It mainly used the colloquial language and basically reflected Chinese appearance from Southern Song Dynasty to early Ming Dynasty. Moreover its length is so long with rich language materials that it becomes an important literature for the study of modern Chinese. Therefore the study on the grammar of this novel takes on the important academic significance.In this thesis, we choose adverbs of degree in ShuiHuZhuan as the object of study, and according as whether the adverbs have explicit comparison object divide the 58 adverbs of degree which appear in the novel into 2 major types: absolute adverbs of degree and relative adverbs of degree, again according to the differences of degree quantity divide them respectively into four quantity classes, totally 8 categories. After that, we calculate, describe and analyze the usage of each adverb of degree roundly, concretely and detailedly. The angles of study on each adverb mainly include the origin and development, the ability of combination, the function of syntax, the applicability of sentence-type, etc. We also compare the synonymy monosyllable and disyllable adverbs of degree synchronically from the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic angles.This thesis makes the combination of quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, synchronic study with diachronic study, microcosmic study with macroscopical study, and also illuminate with the statistical method by the list. It sketches the system of adverbs of degree in ShuiHuZhuan and the character of every adverb on usage and distribution.
