The Analysis Of Woman Novelistic Images Under Chekhov's Viewpoint On Woman

As a literary giant, Chekhov's works have gained great popularity and concerns among Chinese readers. Chekhov is one of greatest Russian writers who has been introduced and commented hotly in modern history of literature in China. Applying the method of materials and documents and analyzing method of selected works , the article analyzes the reason and the developing process of writer's viewpoint on woman, also analyzes the woman novelistic images under his viewpoint on woman and the social meaning of his viewpoint on woman and the woman novelistic images through analyzing, comparing and complicated study.The formation of his viewpoint on woman falls into three stages: at the beginning, his awareness focuses on the sympathy to the slaved women and his dissatisfaction to the social situation in which women are spoilt under the domineering men power; then turned into expecting and calling for woman's self-realization; at the end, he realized that the only way to liberate women is to fight for independence, freedom. Therefore, according to his understanding of the viewpoint on woman in his novels, the woman images can be divided into three main groups. In the first group, the women who are anguished and tormented under three dominant power of politics, divinity and man. They are shouldering the backbreaking burdens and their status have been degenerated into something like slaves, living commodity or fish on the cutting board. Those women are desperately suffering exploration and humiliation. The second group, the women who gradually awakened and seek for their pure love, dream of freedom and happiness and look for true essence of human life, never cry or desperate before their bad fate. They start going into practice to fight with old tradition and convention in order to seek for entirely new way of their own to live. The third group, the women who devote themselves to the social activities and are unwilling to yield before their fate. They are independent and plunge into the wave of mass movement without any hesitation to fight for their new life.Chekhov's viewpoint on woman has formed and matured step by step. He is from under social class, so he has much sympathy towards poor people. His sympathy towards women is the ideological foundation to the formation of his viewpoint on woman. He hates malice and cruelty and he is brave enough to disgust social sin and inequality. He is also open and upright; cautious and modest. We notice his high quality of social responsibility.All above, those characteristics have become indispensable elements in the formation of his viewpoint on woman. In addition, the environment of the age he lived is another important element.Chekhov's viewpoint on woman has a far-reaching realistic meaning to the world women liberation. The images of humiliated and tormented women portrayed in Chekhov's works will arise our sympathy and indignation and make people resented and enraged by the cruel social institution in which women are exploited and even humiliated. The images of women who rebel their family and seek for their freedom, make more women awakened and encourage them to strive for their dignity right and status. The images portrayed in Chekhov's novels as a lively, brave, devoted themselves to the mass movement have become the model for women, leading the awakened women to be self- strengthening, encouraging them to take part in to the mass movement and inspiring them to head for new life. The woman characters portrayed in Chekhov's novels have an effect of light on women liberation movement, and inspire women to step into glorious future.
