Modern Research Perspective Of Chekhov Plays

Chekhov’s dramas are of extremely strong literariness, with his short stories together constitute a unique literary world. Without further research on the dramas of Chekhov, it would be hard to understand Chekhov’s creation style and impossible to grasp his literary world thoroughly. He is a great master of realistic drama, while at the same time he is also the pioneer of modern drama. His dramas contain many elements of the modern dramas and his masterpieces of dramas have profound and tremendous influence on modern dramas of20th century whether in the aspect of theme, structure, or narrative techniques.This thesis takes texts of Chekhov’s dramas as the research object, and makes an all-around analysis from the respects of theme, structure, narrative techniques, then based on this, it discusses the modernistic artistic characteristics of Chekhov’s dramas. The foreword part mainly gives a brief account of the research history and actualities of the Chekhov’s dramas, and explains the value and significance of this research. The first chapter discusses the theme of modernistic and expounds that the theme of Chekhov’s dramas is absurdity and symbolism and the relationship with the modernist theme. The second chapter explores the structure of the dramas, and demonstrates that structure of dramas in Chekhov’s creation have modernity characteristic. Through analyzing deeply the difference between structure of Chekhov’s dramas and traditional dramas structure from three aspects:the inside and outside, temporal-spatial structure and deep structure. The third chapter begins from narrative techniques, to elaborate that the narrative rhythm, narrative language and narrative writing skill in Chekhov’s dramas have modern characteristic. The conclusion makes a summary of the whole thesis.Chekhov wins wide recognition in playdom of Russia and even world for his reform and innovation of dramas. From the outside to the inside and from the easy to the difficult, the whole thesis expounds modernist elements in Chekhov’s dramas, so as to prove the impact that Chekhov dramas have on modern drama in20century.
