Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is the essential constituent of Chinese traditional culture treasure. The TCM literature translation not only is helpful to the further development of TCM in the world scope, also is the important content in cultural exchange between China and west. The language and cultural barriers as well as the huge difference between western medicine and TCM cause the TCM literature translation work being beset with difficulties. Therefore, in the current TCM medicine literature translation, wrong translations and mistranslations phenomena have massive existences, which make the overall translation quality in a low level. Also there are inadequate competent TCM translation practitioners in China. In recent years, more and more scholars have realized the crucial guidance of translation theory to the TCM translation, but as a result of all sorts of reasons, the TCM translation until now still lacked the effective translation theory and the standard. This also is one of main barriers which the present TCM translation faces. In view of the above phenomena, the application of German functionalist Skopostheorie in TCM nomenclature translation has been conducted in the thesis. Its basic concepts and the instructional significance to TCM nomenclature translation are analyzed in detail, which mainly includes the history, present situation, difficulties, Skopos and prospective reader of TCM translation. The three principles are proposed as follows: firstly, try to use common words to avoid absolute westernization and keep traditional concept in TCM nomenclature; secondly, emphasizing the medical information to avoid over-literal translation and dealing with culture elements appropriately; thirdly, standardization of TCM nomenclature should be facilitated as soon as possible. The widely used translation methods in TCM translation are discussed in the late part of thesis as the various selections by translators to improve the translation quality.
