Under the background of cultural convergence and the guide of going globalcultural strategy, translation between Chinese and Western media products has open adoor for cultural exchanges, especially documentary. It is regarded as an important way tocultural communication with its facticity and artistry. However, not all Chinesedocumentary works are well-translated, poor translations have had negative influence ondocumentaries’ acceptability. Thus subtitle translation has become the most importantfactor in whether foreign audiences can understand and appreciate Chinese documentary. As a communicative activity, documentary has the objective to convey information toaudiences and achieve its goal of communication and education. Documentary subtitletranslation aims at realizing intercultural communication of target audiences underdifferent cultural background. It is an interaction which crosses languages and culturesamong the translator, the author and the reader of the translated material. And this purposejust agrees with the translation theory Skopostheorie, a translation theory put forwardby Katharina Reiss and Hans Vermeer in the20thcentury.Based on the Skopostheorie and its three rules——skopos rule, coherence rule andfidelity rule, this thesis has made a research on documentary subtitle translation principlesand strategies by taking an excellent documentary work Liang Sicheng and LinHuiyin as the study case and combining translational features of documentary subtitle withspecific examples.
