With the rapid development of world economy, people have increasingly enlarged their communications with others and the intercultural communications among countries are becoming more and more frequent and important. Translation as a means of bridging intercultural communication has been discussed heatedly by linguists and translators. They have studied different translation strategies and put forwards kinds of new strategies. Zero-translation discussed in this thesis is one of them.Zero-translation is a new concept first put forward by Du Zhengming, but he didn't expatiate this concept and translated it as"Bu Yi"rather than"Ling Fan Yi". Thus his concept didn't cause much discussion."Ling Fan Yi"is a new Chinese translation for zero-translation by Professor Qiu Maoru. After this new concept appeared in Chinese Translators Journal, much argument is aroused. For example, Jia Ying wrote the paper"zero-translation or untranslatability"to discuss with Professor Qiu. Professor Liu Mingdong and Luo Guoqing, and some other scholars have also written papers to support Professor Qiu's opinion. This thesis also supports professor Qiu's opinion. Firstly, it explains the importance of intercultural communication, and expatiates that translation is a part of communication, an important means of intercultural communication. Secondly, it reviews the interrelations among culture, language and translation. Thirdly, beginning from analyzing translatability and untranslatability, supporting by theories of functional equivalence and the principle of least effort, we get the new definition of zero-translation and classify it, explaining its historical development at the same time. Fourthly, we cite examples of zero-translation's application in kinds of media and literary styles. Through those examples, we analyze reasons for the existing of zero-translation.However, every coin has two sides. Though there are many advantages of zero-translation, there are disadvantages too. Translators who are lazy might use zero-translation as an excuse, two much using of zero-translation will make the readers confusing. Thus, we should use it reasonably rather than blindly. All in all, zero-translation is an important translation method in this intercultural communication world.
