In the latest 3 centuries before 1940, Chinese intelligentsia has undergone unprecedented twisting fate and wrenching spiritual baptism. Despite many diligent scholars once were the backbones of the nation in various historical periods, the accelerating political and economic changes have imperceptible influences on the transformation of the scholars' social part. The three novels, The Scholars, Nie Hai Hua and Fortress Besieged, reflected the very transformtion process in different periods during these 300 years. As to the images of the scholars, The Scholars mainly describes the numb images of scholars who are infatuated with stereotyped writing; Nie Hai Hua mainly describes the transformation of the scholars' images from bewildered ones to enlightened ones; Fortress Besieged mainly describes the cynical mazed intellectuals. In the conversions of the scholars' images in these three novels, all the intellectuals were compelleded to make choice between ideal kong-fu-zi gospel and law of jungle, as well as traditional culture and Western culture, finally some of them had evolved with agony by syncretizing the two pairs of opposing poles.Under the situation of the declining recruiting way by stereotyped writing, the deepening national crisis, and the accelerating collision between the traditional culture and Western culture, the knowledge class must make a new choice. During this process, their knowledge structures undergo a fundamental change. And their roles in the society, as a result, shift from operators of the country's political and cultural destiny to intellectuals drifting from the country's political power center. Although they shouted anxiously, they can not save its growing marginalization and the fate of civilians. The authors of these three stories, Wu Jingzi, Zeng Pu, Qian Zhongshu, had great convergence in cultural psychology. They not only deeply considered the developing tendency of the traditional culture, but also involved in the construction of intellectuals' personality and the positioning of their values. They revealed the psychology of the scholars living in their respective historical eras and designed the perfect scholars in their eyes.In short, after analyzing the variation of the images of scholars and the cultural principles of the authors of these three stories, the dissertation studied the culture significance of the transformation of the images of scholars in the latest 3 centures before 1940.
