The Study On The Code-Switching In The News Headlines

With the great changes of current society , there are corresponding changes in Chinese vocabulary system. The language which is active in the mass media is a mirror that embodies the dynamic language and reflects the development and changes of society, economy, culture, education and many other aspects.Code-switching is that the user use language (including dialect, vernacular) from one language to another. It is widespread phenomenon of language contact. The Code-switching study of foreign linguists focused on the conversation code- switching in minority areas or once colonized areas . The paper on written code–switching is few . The linguists had less concern on the Code-switching of specific fields such as advertising, literature, news . There is no study of code–switching on news headlines right now . Newspaper as one of the basic media ,its words and sentences are typical and play an exemplary role. News headlines as the most important area of news reflect author's wisdom and efforts .In this paper ,Code-switching of news headlines were analyzed and the reasons of occurrence were explored. The code-switching of news title is defined that the sentence which Chinese is the main language used English or was embedded Latin letters in the text.The author collected 304 corpus from nearly 30 kinds of important news paper such as the , , , in March and April. In the newspaper headlines as research Object, the syntactic structure, type, the distribution and the main characteristics of Code-switching is described and analyzed in detail from syntagmatic relations and paradigmatic relations .It is showed that Chinese language is the main language, English is the main embedding language and a few of latin letters is also existed in the news headlines with code-switching. The embedding language is mainly English words or abbreviations , and English sentence is few because of the length limitation of headline .The background factors of Code-switching was analyzed from the economic perspective and cultural perspective. Economic development and the improvement of living standards, political, economic and cultural exchanges have brought new thinking and new concept. The rise of the middle class, learning a second language and journalist individual motivation made Code-switching be applied from a theoretical possibility.The functional factors and linguistic factors of Code-switching was analyzed from perspective of communication strategy and vocabulary system. Code-switching have semantics value, pragmatics value, rhetorical function, emotional value, social and cultural functions.The impact and the corresponding norms of Code-switching were analyzed and discussed in the end of paper.
