An Analysis Of The Image Of Stupid Intellectuals In Shandong Folktales

In the ancient Chinese society, there always exist two kinds of oppsite ideas in regarding the intellectuals. On the one hand is the approval of the social concept of "after acquiring achievements from study then to be an officer", thus to be selected as an official is considered the individual struggle legitimate path. In Shandong province, the hometown of Confucius and Mencius, the same concept certainly be spread. On the other hand, in a large number of Shandong folktales, the role which the intellectuals acts actually is opposite with the traditional ideas. The intellectuals lost their status as the social authority, not only knowing nothing about the agricultural production knowledge, but also in the poems and songs creation which they can do well. Thus, a further study is needed to discuss why there are so many stupid intellectuals' roles in Shandong's folktales.This article focuses on the story-type and the character role and their function, the development of the stupid intellectuals'role in the folktales, and the role function which acts as in the folktales. Realized this story-type mostly exists in life stories and the partial folk jokes, it is not an independent story-type. The role image of the stupid intellectuals appears most in the wise-women type and in the three sons-in-law types usually is about the stupid intellectuals'words and action. The stupid intellectuals certainly are not the story heroes, instead they always act as the heroes' opposite side, while heroes always display their good personality and talent by solving the difficult problems set by stupid intellectuals.From all of the stupid intellectual role images in folktales, we realize that on the one hand they are related with the contradiction of physical production and intellectual production in the Chinese traditional agricultural society. On the other hand, the traditional Chinese ossifies political system also has created the intellectuals'personality distortion, making them more and more far away from the ordinary populace, thus the opposition between the ruling class and the ordinary populace is the basic reason to produce the stupid intellectual roles in folktales.
