Brief Discussion On The Translators' Thinking Modes And Translation Methodology

Translation is to express the content of the original text in a different language completely and accurately. As for the function, language is the tool to think as well as to communicate. The ability to think is a function of the human brain and thinking is actually a process of reflecting the outside world. Logic is the rule we can find in people's thought and grammar is the fundamental rule underlining all different languages. The relation between thought and language is that thought is the information which is to be expressed and language is the channel through which the information gets across to the others. Language helps people not only to describe but also to shape what they feel, think and experience. However, words people use to express what they think and their thoughts are not in correspondence to each other on a one-to-one basis. The combination of the oneness of thought and the availability of variety of ways to express leads to differently translated versions of the same original text. Theories applicable in translation practice emphasize that the objectiveness and the descriptiveness when translation is being done can not be lost. Theories that can be utilized in literature translation put the focus on appropriateness and style of the words. These methods previously mentioned have their own disadvantages. We think that translation should be done both scientifically and literarily. In the translation process, all forms of thinking ways that are abstract, visual and inspirational could be put into practice in a comprehensive way. Briefly speaking, translation is to create a satisfactory version in accordance to the style, type and ways in which full content is put of the original text. Therefore, the relation between translation and ways of thinking is a subject that is worth much attention.Main body of my graduation paper has four component parts in exclusion of preface and summary. First chapter discusses the nature and forms of thinking, and reasons why research on thinking is important to translation. Second chapter mainly talks about oral translation from the perspective of inspirational thinking. Through the active participation of brain, translators analyze, estimate, reason and select appropriate words to deliver the intended information to targeted listeners. An explosive understanding of and insight into the matter in question is the result of accumulative experiences and exceptional manifestation of creative thinking. Third chapter proposes that translation is a process of creative thinking. Image-building includes both kinds of images that are scientific and artistic. As a result, whether the original text be artistic or scientific, visual thinking is practicable with translation. Of course when artistic texts are to be translated, abstract thinking is only applicable in addition to visual thinking. Forth chapter analyzes practices of scientific translation and abstract thinking from the perspective of logical reasoning.In order for the assumptions presented in this paper to be proven correct and persuasive, I referred to a large amount of date in analyzing, proving, summing up my hypothesis. However, due to various reasons such as limited experience and resources, there might be some parts which can be made better. Therefore, comments will be well received.
