This is a translation project report of Chinese Ways of Thinking(Chapter12—13), a social science monograph written by Wu Chun,a professor of philosophy. In this book, the author states hiscomprehensive, systematic and thorough thoughts on the ancientChinese ways of thinking, summarizes the intrinsic patterns,structures and characteristics of it and then presents his own views onsome common-sense notions. Chapter12illustrates the fact thatChinese people paid special attention to antithetic phenomena. Due tothe promotion by such continuous attentions, antithetic thinking modehad finally established its position as mainstream in Chinese ways ofthinking after undertaking a development:phenomena--perceptions--concepts. Chapter13elaborates the strongsymbolism in Chinese ways of thinking, particularly presented inChinese art. Guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, theauthor adopted relevant translation strategies and methods, such asliteral translation and free translation; domestication andforeignization; amplification and omission; division and combination,to deal with the features in the source text, such as wide cultural scopeand short compound sentences in Chinese.
