This thesis focuses on a group of thematic characters in Graham Greene's novels, who Greene himself defined as "The White on the decline in remote foreign countries" or "The Fallen people". Usually in Greene's writings, this kind of characters are regarded as the narrative centre, who reflect Greene's great concerns about the self-consciousness and inner anxiety in the humanity of the 20th century .The motif, which is especially outstanding in Greene's late works, is an important achievement of Greene's literary art. This thesis discusses two related characters in detail, with a special consideration about the psychic-relation between the character and the place, and explores the origin and evolvement of this subject by elaborating the existential transcendence of characters and the dual characteristic in its religious discourse. The thesis is divided into 5 parts:Part one Preface is mainly an introduction of the current situation of domestic Greene study, and a brief analysis about the subject.Part two draws out the discusssion about the exotic background with an argument in the acadame circle. The investigation considers that Greene made the exotic background a special space and place with a spiritual characteristic of the modern society to express his cultural acknowledge and consideration about the modernity. And with the combination to the religious sense, the exotic background gains an ontological significance.Part three and part four are the particular reading on two characters, Scobie in The Heart of Matter and Fowler in The Quiet American. The interpretation points out that Greene revealed the existential transcendence of "The Fallen people" in the pursuit and acquirement of the religious sense by a serious and penetrating depict of these characters based on their existential experience of individual, and emphasizes the dual characteristic of the existential transcendence and the illegibility of self-cognition of the characters.Part five briefly elaborates other related characters and the inner meaning of the subject, summarizes the characteristics of the character group, and at last attempts to assesses the essence and significance in this character subject on which Greene insisted a necessity and existence for the religious sense.
