The Research About Marriage Of Princesses In Tang Dynasty

In the recent years' research on Tang Dynasty, more books are about marriage of Tang Dynasty, whose contents involve marriage convention, system ,ideology and so on. There are,however, fewer books on marriage of princess,whose contents mainly concentrate on certain princesses or one part of marriage of princess. Such as《Research on Marriage with Minority Ruler》by Cui Mingde discusses the marriage of princess and its historical effect;《Analysis on Convention of Wei Shang Princess in Tang Dynasty》by Lei Qiaoling states the question about the difficult marriage of princess in Tang Dynasty.This paper mainly analyses and summarizes the marriage of princess in Tang Dynasty systematically and tries to study the questions on remarriage of princesses and their disobeying women's courtesy.The paper is composed of introductory, body and postscript. The body part consists of five chapters. Chapter One briefly states the basic state of marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty. Chapter Two discusses the political marriage of princess in Tang Dynasty. Firstly, Emperor's son-in-law in different times are classified according to parentage. Secondly, accoding to it, we summarize characteristics and criteria of their selecting emperor's son-in-law. Lastly, from it we expose the politics of marriage. Chapter Three describes the tragedy of marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty. Firstly, we indicate the tragedy of marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty. secondly, comparing their marriage with common females', we study the tragedy of marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty, considering that their marriage result from male's and king's willings, and its tragedy is unchangeable. Chapter Four discusses the sacrifice of marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty. Firstly, exemplifying remarried princesses and analysing its background and cause, we think they have no special rights and it's not their individual behaviour, but from the politics. Secondly, exemplifying the princess' marriage with minority ruler, we restate the sacrifice of marriage of princesses. Chapter Five gives four examples which happened in different periods in Tang Dynasty to indicate the question on difficult marrying of princesses in Tang Dynasty, and from social convention, royal authority, princesses' behaviour and fate of emperor's son-in-law and so on, we analyse its cause..We draw a conclusion in this paper that the marriage of princesses in Tang Dynasty is one with politics, therefore it's tragic, sacrificial and difficult marriage.
