Society development requires that colleges can cultivate students of comprehensive qualities. Musical education, as an important part of arts education, is not only one of the important ways and contents of actualizing quality education, but also an essential part of higher education. It is the main approach of actualizing aesthetic education, and a necessary way of improving the students' comprehensive qualities. Music optional course is used as an important approach in musical education for college students. However, in the teaching process, it is found that some students can absorb themselves in the lesson while some others would talk, sleep or do other assignments. What's worse, even occur some phenomena such as being late, leaving earlier and absenteeism. These negative phenomena will undoubtedly affect the quality of the courses. This article is theoretically based on the achievements of studying motive in educational psychology, and practically based on students of musical optional course in Putian University. The author has performed researches and analysis into the actuality of the studying motives of students in Putian University so as to come up with suggestions on how to cultivate and invoke studying motives in students adopting music optional course in higher education.
