The film is an integrated artistic form, characterized as presenting story, emotion and perspectives via motion pictures. Since the invention of film, its theories have been developing and prospering in abundant vitality and variety. The study of film has been stated as an specific academic field. Regardless of various perspectives, philosophers would not slide over one subject—the relation between image and the reality. This article starts with the relation between image and the reality, sticks to the sense of"feeling real"while watching films, and discusses the basic components and some relevant theories of the art of film. By doing so, this article strives to explain that film is based upon"feeling real"and judged with the criterion of verism. The notion of verism in this article refers to the accordance with people's perception and experience. Film-making is an on-site photographing process. The image it produces and the movement of images accord with the way people sense the reality and the motion. The sound, story and acting of a film aim to present people's real lives and emotions, which enhances the sense of reality a film produces. Compared with other artistic categories, the art of filming possesses the strongest feeling of realness, and its footstone, artistic target, and judging criterion are all tightly mingled with verism.
