Thomas Hardy's novels have been followed with great interests by the related critics. It's both because he has a critical challenge towards the disadvantages to society, and because the novels adopt the unique narrative techniques and narrative tactics successfully. All of them consist of the novels' narrative manner and esthetical characteristics.Jude the Obscure is Hardy' another representative novel following the "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", and it is also his last and the most controversial novel. Since Hardy 's "Jude the Obscure" came out, its fate has been erratic. But, time had not made it covered with dust, censure has not buried it either. On the contrary, as time goes on, the baptism of the trials and hardship, temper out its dazzling brilliant rays further. Based on a detailed analysis of its text, the present paper deals with several issues concerned with the narrative characteristics of "Jude the Obscure", around which issues the theoretical framework of the present thesis is constructed. This thesis focuses on the pluralistic narrative perspectives, the characters' speech presentation and the implicit narrative structure used in her short stories. It's made up of three chapters:I . Narrative perspectives in"Jude the Obscure"In the novel, the narrative perspectives set and adjust the focal length lens , and limit the role of real life. Most of writers in this period employed a single perspective.Hardy used the pluralistic narrative perspectives in the 19th century. But it is untill the 20th century that the pluralistic narrative perspectives became a novelist's general narrative echniques. The narrative perspectives are classified into zero-focused perspective, external perspective and inner perspective.I will inperpret their unique narrative charms one by one.1,Hardy was good at using zero-focused perspective to make information and judgement disclosed to the readers with occasional fragment of language interpretation from different angles and at all levels. In "Jude the Obscure", the author as a narrator, becomes an indispensable element in the creation of a complete novels and played a unique aesthetic features in cteating a linguistic world. He not only introduces the background on the story and suggests the development of the main plot, but also adjusts the narrative speed . Sometimes he can not help jumping out as the author to intervene the narrative forms in the novel.2,Obviously, Hardy awared that zero-focused perspective can force the readers to reach a consensus through the removal speech expressed by the syntax of the language, stance and attitude, but the readers will be tired of the endless preaching voice no matter how eloquent it is. Therefore, in order to reduce these drawbacks, Hardy describes overall narratition with zero-focused perspective, and uesed a limited perspective description in the detail. In order to create suspense, Hardy changed zero-perspective for external perspective. The narrator as a bystander pretends that he do not know the situation in order to enlarge the distance between people in the novel and to maximize the pursuit of the objective effect of the text.3,Another limited perspective in Hardy's novel is the use of an internal perspective. The tragic death of children and the female shape of Bridehead are excellent examples. Infinitive perspectives in the novels is like multiple parts from the melody, and will be created to be a harmonious art as a whole with the help of readers' active participation.II,Multiple speech discourses in"Jude the Obscure"The second part mainly concentrates on the presentations of multiple speech discourses such as free direct discourse, free indirect discourse. Different forms of speech presentations constitute the unique style of the stories.1,Free direct discourse is a form of the lightest intervention and nearest narrative distance. Without the the pressure of description form, the author is free to performance the content and tone of the figures' discourses. In Jude's subjective world which is displayed by free direct discourse , the readers can get into the consciousness flows of figures without any narrative intervention.2,In the novels of Thomas Hardy, free direct discourses exhibit the objective narrative form, but arouse the voice, movements and state of mind of the chatacters in the hearts of readers. Compared with indirect peeches, free indirect speeches are with a variety of advantages: They can express ridiculed or humorous effect, but also can enhance the reader a sense of sympathy for the characters. The use of indirect quotation in Hardy's novel makes the distance between readers and characters closer, so that readers can undetstand the author's desire clearly.III,The Deep Structure Model in "Jude the Obscure"--Thenarrative circleThe plot development model in "Jude the Obscure" presents an circular closed structure. The characters in the novel trace the cause and love for the start and lose happiness in in the end .They completed a process described in the circular ring structure of the narrative with nothing in the beginning and the end. The novel obtains narrative impetus from the plots, and forces the characters to get into the tragedy default track. The circular narrative structure of Hardy's novel is not the only showing off the skills of narrative, but reflecting's ideals, beliefs and many other profound thought of life. Hardy performs a tragedy process of life with a circular structure. We can visualise the survival of humanity, the meaning of life of suspicion and confusion through such pessimism of Hardy. In conclusion, the publication of Hardy's "Jude the Obscure" had been criticized angrily,Hardy has to abandon the fiction writing and is committed to writing poetry, but as a writer,he has a responsibility of narrative arts..Hardy did not give up her concern with narrative forms of novels. The skills in the novel is hardy's conscious pursuit, "Jude the Obscure" has finally been recognized as an outstanding novel after his death, and is still the focus of attention of many scholars for more than 100 years .
