Translator's Subjectivity In Literary Translation

This thesis is devoted to the study of the translator's subjectivity in literary translation, and takes Su Manshu's translation as a case study to analyze his subjectivity, which is the dialectical unity of purpose, activeness and limitation.Translator is the key participant in translation. Every translator has his own intension in this purposeful activity, and his subjectivity is not arbitrary but constrained by many factors. In order to fulfill his translation purpose, the translator must give full play to his activeness.Based on the discussion of the translator's subjectivity in literary translation in a general sense, this thesis analyzes Su Manshu's subjectivity in translation activity in detail. Su exerts his subjectivity not only in textual operation, but also in his pre-translation choice. That is to say, his subjectivity is exhibited in his choice of translation strategies as well as his selection of the works to be translated. Before translation, Su intentionally chooses those works which can express his political ideal and his pursuit of love and freedom. In translation activity, Su manipulates the original versions, adopting many peculiar strategies and methods to achieve his translation purpose. But there is no doubt that in his translation activity Su is restricted by many factors as well. Therefore, his subjectivity is the dialectical unity of purpose, activeness and limitation.
