Since early 1960's, the attitudes of translation scholars to Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory (FET) have changed from early total acceptance to present much criticism and even occasionally total refusal.By generally analyzing the early perspectives from which this theory was commented, it can be easily found that the perspectives, at most times, are focused on the nature, the criterion and the testing of translation. Besides this, the levels at which this theory was commented are commonly focused on language and style of the TLT to which the traditional translation theories pay much attention. However, with the turning up of the "cultural turn" in Western translation field and meanwhile more attention to translators in 1970's, the cultural essence of translation and the translator's subjectivity became one of the focuses of the study of translation theory. With the help of this great "cultural turn" and the reference of various comments of the translation scholars on Nida's FET, this thesis recomments on this theory. In the main part, firstly from the perspective of the cultural essence of translation and with intercultural communication theories as the theoretical basis, this thesis explores certain feasibilities of the theory by respectively questioning 3 misunderstandings of the translation scholars about this theory; then from the perspective of the translator's subjectivity and with the relative theories as the theoretical basis, this thesis analyzes one limitation of this theory and finally from five respects, this thesis discusses some primary demonstrations of the translator's subjectivity in practice. This thesis is divided into four chapters:In chapter one (Introduction), the author points out the background of the composing of this thesis. In chapter two (Literature Review), the author makes a detailed list of previous viewpoints on Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory. In chapter three (Research on FET), the author dwells on three misunderstandings of some translators on Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and meanwhile its one more flaw.In chapter four (Conclusion), the author states how to evaluate Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and any other translation theory impartially and reasonably. This thesis aims at enabling readers to understand Nida's FET more clearly and deeply so that they can employ this theory in their translation practice.
