The Chinese"di xi"Construction is one of the most popular research topics in Chinese grammar in modern times. Based on Gestalt psychology and Langacker's cognitive grammar, the author does a fresh study on"di xi"constructions in Chinese.Firstly the thesis introduces the theoretical background and then discusses arguments about"di xi"constructions'independence and disputes on the naming, definition and scope. Meanwhile, the object of the current study is made clear. Then the author gives a brief review on former studies of the target constructions in syntax, semantics, pragmatics and cognitive approach, and points out the problems of previous studies. One of the most important principles in Gestalt psychology is that the whole is more than the sum of its parts, and hence the whole meaning of a construction is not just the sum of its components. The main part of this thesis, based on Langaker's action chain, stage model and principle of specificity, analyzes three different Gestalt meanings of the target constructions. Perceiving the whole structure meanings and combining former study results on analysis of separate elements of the constructions will bring people deeper understanding of the target constructions. Moreover, reasons for preferring the name of"di xi"constructions are explained and a possible idea to solve the controversial problem of bi-constituent is provided. Finally limitations of the present study and suggestions for further studies are stated in conclusion of this thesis.
