Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the greatest thinkers in Western history. His profound and original aesthetical thoughts have a far-reaching impact on modern ideology and literature. Through rereading the classic works of Nietzsche, the present study explores his aesthetical thoughts and its philosophical basis, and highlights the essential factors being ignored by past and recent scholars. In Nietzsche's late years, he propounded the theories of will to power and eternal recurrence, which is a development of his initial metaphysics of art. Developing the useful and discarding the useless, Nietzsche tried to solve the dilemma of aesthetics. Reflecting on these significant thoughts that have been overlooked in the past, we can discover its academic value and provide guidance to the development of today's Chinese aesthetics. The present study includes four chapters. Chapter one, as an introduction, expatiates on the basis of this research, discussing the issues of different approaches to studying Nietzsche, the various style of his works and some issues on his unpublished manuscript. Focusing on early Nietzsche's metaphysics of art, the second chapter interprets Die Geburt der Tragodie via close reading, and Nietzsche's other early works are also taken into consideration and interpretation. Centered on Also Sprach Zarathustra, the third chapter analyzes the theories of will to power and eternal recurrence, and explores the philosophical basis of these theories. Chapter four provides a conclusion which discusses the theoretical and practical value of studying Nietzsche's developing the useful and discarding the useless to his metaphysics of art for today's Chinese aesthetic research.
