According to the characteristics of prose,"aesthetic qualities" are the most important and difficult problems for translators to surmount.Generally speaking, the "beauty" of prose is mainly embodied in its formal and non-formal systems, and the ideal for prose translation is,of course,to realize the "aesthetic elements" at both levels.Chinese and western people have dissimilar aesthetic perspectives because of their different thinking patterns;and in addition, both Chinese and English languages have their own features in delivering the linguistic traits;therefore,it is not easy to represent the aesthetic qualities at all levels. The correlation of Reception Aesthetics and Literary Translation had been mentioned by some scholars in this field before. But the application of Reception Aesthetics in literary translation was just for the sake of aesthetic appreciation of the translated versions, some related and practical principles or strategies have not been proposed yet.In this thesis, the author stressed the importance of readers' response from an aesthetic perspective. It can be indicated that the ST,the translator, the TT and the readers connect with each other tightly. Therefore, harmonizing all these elements should be the priority in literary translation. Some factors of the aesthetic subjects can directly give impact on the actualization as well as the reception of aesthetic feelings, which includes the cultural background, the aesthetic competence and the aesthetic perspective. The "beauty" within the aesthetic objects ought to be discovered, deployed and harmonized by the aesthetic subjects in the aesthetic processing. In this thesis, harmony theory will be applied to prose translation. The author will conduct aesthetic processing under the guidance of harmony principle that proposed by Zheng Hailing. The harmony principle originates from the culture and the philosophical system in China and the western world.Because of the nature of literary translation, its translation activities usually come along with some aesthetic requirements, which include harmonizing these crucial relations between the ST and the translator, the readers and the TI',the ST and the TT.The author of this thesis intends to take prose translation as a typical representative to prove the applicability of the harmony principle in literary translation for the achievements of Chinese modern prose. Two English versions of He Tang Yue Se will be the carrier to embody the aesthetic thinking, the adaptation, the harmonizing process of the translators during the translation. It can be exemplified that the harmony principle may be a general criterion for literary translation, even as the highest evaluation standard.Harmony is the beauty with contents. This is also in agreement with the essential features of prose and its translation. The idea of 'harmony' is in accord with the political advocation and follow the trend of the world, this idea could also guide people in their daily life as well.In the near future,a more complete system of harmony theory would be established. It will have quite an effect on literary translation.
