Classical Chinese poetry, as the jewel of the Chinese culture and civilization, has a long history of more than three thousand years. Among all the types of literary translation, poetry is actually well-known due to its difficulty in translation. In fact, foreign readers are not able to have an understanding of all the English versions of classical Chinese poetry, or even they may feel puzzled. Many English versions of classical Chinese poetry usually cannot carry the equivalent effect and beauty of the source texts because of the translators’lack of skill, the differences between the Chinese language and the English language and the inherent differences of cultures and civilizations between the two countries. The most significant in the translation of classical Chinese poetry is conveyance of artistic conception. The achievements of translation of Chinese poetry are based on conveying artistic conception of Chinese poetry as well as guide the readers towards a living space associated with imagination. This thesis firstly introduces poetry translation briefly. The second chapter reviews the results of previous researches. The third chapter analyzes translation aesthetics, its development in China and its relationship with poetry translation. The fourth chapter takes the version of translation aesthetics to analyze the translation of artistic conception in classical Chinese poetry. The fifth chapter discusses aesthetic subjects:the translator and the target readers. The sixth chapter deals with aesthetic objects:content. It seems to the author that artistic conception can be successfully transferred to readers in three ways:firstly, literal translation; secondly, transformation of figures of speech; finally, amplification. Depending on the previously mentioned analysis, the thesis comes to the conclusion:artistic conception is not unsearchable. In terms of translators, they should understand original poetry exactly and insist upon the principles associated with artistic conception. The beauty of artistic conception of classical Chinese poetry may be delivered to the maximum degree.
