Philosophic poetry is a genre of poetry reflecting philosophic thinking through sentiments in literature, which has embodied the achievements of the ancient sages' pursuit of Truth, Great and Beauty. Also as the embodiment of poets' experiences and talents, in the field of Tibetan poetry, philosophy poetry is more easily to comprehend and accept than philosophy because of its poetic style of writing and vivid language, although the latter does better in presenting philosophical theories. With different topics varying from society, life, and nature to love and friendship, the poems have been written as illustration of truths, admonishment to mortals, introspect of poets themselves, remarks on earthly life, etc. with its profound themes, sincere sentiments and rich image, philosophic poetry plays an important role in Tibetan literature. However, systematic research in this field has not been fully carried out yet. Thus relevant studies would be significant for a comprehensive cognition of Tibetan literature and its philosophic thinking. The present paper is such a an attempt based of the basis.The concept of the pursuit of wisdom is not only an everlasting drive of cultural development, but one of the characteristics of Tibetan culture.Influenced by this concept, generations of Tibetan poets have been expressing their philosophy, values, world views and different philosophical theories through various kinds of poems which eventually turn into the form of philosophic poetry. Beneath the presentation of the poets' philosophic thinking and soul, their ideas of art, religion and society are also embodied in the poems.The paper includes six chapters, including the chapters of introduction and conclusion.Introduction explains the term "Philosophic Poetry ", discusses the significance of the study, and puts forward possible problems in future research.Chapter One introduces styles of Tibetan literature and relevant social background in different periods, and explains the concept, range and elements for formation of philosophic poetry under three different styles.Chapter Two introduces the development of philosophic poetry, and meanwhile discusses the difference between it and other literature styles as the presentation of philosophic theories.Chapter Three and Four tries to analyze the connotation and literature characteristics of philosophic poetry. According to the author, on the one hand, majority of Tibetan philosophic poetry presents the ideas of causality, the domination of heart over the world, the essential importance of truth, etc. On the other hand, it has inherited traditional rhetoric manners, but meanwhile incorporates some characteristics of contemporary literature.Chapter Five, as the part of conclusion, explains the organization of the whole paper and some problems in process of study.Mainly based on relevant literature and philosophic theories, this paper attempts to study on the development, connotation and literature characteristics of philosophic poetry through the analysis of collected poems with the adoption of the research methods of social history. Aesthetic of Reception, cultural level, ets. Meanwhile some personal views are proposed, and its value and influence upon future literature works re discussed.So far a good many authoritative works have been read and feferred to, and the paper has been modified several times, however, problems in the paper are inevitable because of the limitation of my theoretical foundation and academic experience. Therefore, I will appreciate the comments from all the experts and scholars.
