On The Construction Of Context And Its Pragmatic Functions

Context is a hot spot of current study. The research on context can be dated back to ancient times all over the world because people's verbal communication at all times is not only inseparable from the context, but also people are doing the work adapting to Context. Context and discourse are interdependent from each other, and only in a specific context can natural language be understood. In the specific context, the meaning of the discourse can be constrained and explained. Meanwhile, there are many implications outside the discourse and content omitted a lot in the specific context. Context can infer that implication right and contents omitted to make up for the content. This paper first expounded various expression forms of context and discourse on the basis of an introduction to the structure and functions of context, then analyzed the understanding of discourse. Discourse dependents on context and should make some corresponding changes following changes of context for mutual understanding of both sides. As the differences of national customs, knowledge level, age and geographical background of the culture and customs, the two communication sides often have different understandings of discourse causing misreading and migration. Appropriate context can lead to humor and good words can promote the emergence of context. The paper further makes a description that we should take full advantage of context in our discourse communication to achieve the best communicative purpose.
