A Study On Xungu In Nenggaizhai Manlu (能改斋漫录)

Nenggaizhai Manlu (能改齋漫錄) is a Biji of textual research written by Wu Zeng in Song Dynasty which records many data related to the philology study, especially the Xungu data. These data are valued by some scholars due to its values of explanations of words and phrases. It has close relationship with large-scale dictionaries' compilation. Hanyu Da Cidian (汉语大词典) once quotes many articles of Xungu in the book, Guxun Huizuan (故訓滙纂) aslo embodies it as one of Xungu data. But the Xungu data in the book still have many poblems on our standpoints now. Although people have done some sporadic researches on Xungu in the book, it has not been resesched systemically and still existes some problems which have never been pointed out. Therefore, it's meaningful for us to do a overall study on Xungu items in the book.After combing and analysising meticulously Xungu items in the book, Its accomplishments can be reduced to five aspects: Paying attention to records and explanations of new words and phrases, exploring origins of words and phrases, working out some problems of Xungu according to the characteristics of Chinese language and characters, explaining words and phrases correctly on the basis of occuping fully data, and possesing certain grammar ideas. Its shortcomings can be reduced as follows: It explains new words and phrases uncorrectly, and explanatory items are out of accordance with given examples;The errores emerge in exploring origins of words and phrases;It doubts the previous explanations and forms new uncorrect ones;The errores have something to do with the characteristics of meanings of words and phrases; It pays attention to characters and looks down on pronunciations and meanings,which leads to wrong explanations. The shortcomings of the other aspects and so on. We arrive at the conclusion finally: We should be alert to these shortcomings while we use the Xungu data in the book today.
